Mehr's journey through work and Motherhood

This piece of heartfelt post is on the Occasion of Women's Day on March 8, 2016.

Mehr came from a small town and living in Mumbai, was a dream come true. Nothing comes easy and the initial days were full of struggle, but it is not that bad. Talent and hardwork does take you places, it is really your choice, how you wanna handle the same.
Mehr hated the PG owner, she had to share the room with five girls! She was always a foodie, but now it was not easy. Food was always a problem, unless she is invited to a star place for an occasion, or go out with friends and share or go for a lunch and dinner meeting.
Her work at the Advertising Agency was going good and this is her sixth profile after working as a journalist, at PR firm, being into Corporate communication etc.
Gradually she got to change homes, get into better places and the day to marry her love came through.
A complete workaholic, since a very young age, Mehr had never enjoyed even her college days as she started working even before that. There was ambition at first and then came upon family responsibilities.
So, there was no time even for the ritual Honeymoon. They did travel together for work and enjoyed each others company. But she doesn't remember going for any vacation either, inspite of travelling half the world. It has always been work related travel for her.
She married a tad bit late in her life, or so said the so called Society, but there was no delay in the arrival of baby.
Now, the plan was to get started to work life as soon as the baby turns 6 months. Well, she was working while leaving for the hospital for the delivery too and from the hospital too. Working on International projects and having a relative as assistant helped.
When the baby was six months, her heart didn't allow to leave the bay at any Day Care and later she also realised that there is no other way. There was no such trusted family member to look after the kid, not even in a condition who could oversee the nannys. Initial year and a half passed by actually partially working from home, having a brigade of maids and her office assistants helping her out working a few hours from her home.
So, her travel reduced. They did make quite a few trips within the country but most of the time went in taking care of the baby, inspite of ample help at hand. But there was a bit of satisfaction that she was part of her project.
Another year passed and she couldn't take up new projects after delivering all at hand. Couldn't travel as kid had to go to school, had a routine.
What happens to an extremely workaholic girl when she has a child?
There are some, who opt for the Urban Day Care option. Cause No other option. There are some, who have a trusted family member or more than one, specifically parents or In Laws.
Then there are those who Opt to be at home.
Not that Mehr was completely out of work. But still, someone who has working right from the age of 17, and the nature of work always need 24/7 and she being someone always pouring her heart and small on every project, a little extra for sure; this was so different.
The happiness and peace came by looking at her kid and ofcourse the child kept Mehr on her toes.
So, it is like the Chicken and Egg Story with a twist. A full time working woman cannot do justice to family? Consider this case while answering.
A mother cannot have a successful full time work / business after having baby?
Well, there are umpteen examples of ladies who have had beautiful children and successful careers. But the debate will go on forever, cause what goes through a woman's heart, only she knows.
She does find ways and means to balance both, each one in her own way.
But yeah, Mehr could never go back to herself, her travelling self, her dedicated worker self, her soul was with the child.
Did she repent, having the child? No! But there were moments of frustration. The family - joint or Nuclear, plays a big role in this. But in today's world, there are so many Nuclear families, with each member in a different city / state / or country. Some kids grow up at grandparents place and they become awesome, but that was neither a choice, nor would Mehr opt for it. She started working towards developing the kid, but deep within was the workaholic Mehr alive?
