Jay-Z Proposed to Beyoncé Because He Was Worried About Losing Her (Again) - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:27 PM PDT

Beyoncé Knowles is one of the biggest superstars of all time, with a massive fan base and an extravagant net worth. The singer is an acclaimed actress, activist, and producer — and she is a wife and mother as well. There's no doubt that being Beyoncé is hard work, and keeping up with all of her tasks and responsibilities has to get overwhelming at times. Just like good partners everywhere, her husband Jay-Z likely gets worried about her from time to time. As it turns out, his fear for Knowles' workaholic tendencies could have played a role in his marriage proposal to the star.

Beyoncé rose to fame at an early age

Born in Houston, Texas, in 1981, Beyoncé Knowles started singing and dancing at a very early age. She started to get recognition from teachers and peers, and her parents encouraged her to follow her dreams, with her father, Mathew Knowles, even becoming her manager. Knowles joined a girl group as a teenager, and under the name Destiny's Child, the group began touring and recording music, doing what they could to get noticed.

In the late nineties, Destiny's Child had become one of the biggest girl groups in the world, with fans emulating their signature style and singing their catchy lyrics. Still, Knowles was ready to break out on her own, and in 2001, Destiny's Child announced that they would be going on hiatus, freeing up Knowles to work on her own projects. She wasted no time, and started the process of writing and recording her own solo album.

When did Beyoncé start dating Jay-Z?

When she was only eighteen years old, Beyoncé Knowles met the acclaimed rapper Jay-Z. The two hit it off right away and became fast friends. They didn't date until around a year later, after establishing a basis of friendship and mutual understanding. They began collaborating on musical projects, and although many fans and publications speculated about their relationship status, the two steadfastly kept their romance out of the press.

Their early relationship was not without difficulties. The pressures of keeping a high-profile romance very private was no doubt taxing on the couple, added to the fact that both stars were pursuing careers in the music industry. Knowles, in particular, was in the spotlight 24/7, with all eyes looking to how she would handle the transition from member of a girl group to a solo star.

Jay-Z was worried about Beyoncé's workaholic tendencies

In 2005, Jay-Z and Beyoncé Knowles broke up for a brief period of time, according to Cosmopolitan. While the breakup was reportedly due to pervasive rumors of Jay-Z's cheating, there were likely several factors that contributed to the split. One of them could have been that Knowles was so focused on her career. She is an admitted workaholic, and over the years, there have been some unique glimpses into the way that she pushes herself to always give one hundred percent, no matter how tough it might be for her.

The breakup didn't last long, however. Around a year after their initial split, Jay-Z and Knowles were back together and determined to work on any issues that they had. In fact, according to Even the Rich podcast, Jay-Z was so worried about her workaholic tendencies that he decided to take the next step in their relationship by proposing to the hardworking star. Clearly, she accepted his proposal, and in early 2008, they got married in a glamorous, private ceremony. These days, the two are still happily married and share three young children — as well as a massive business empire that earns them millions of dollars.

Bright Black Candles Sees A 'Beyonce Bump' In Sales - WUNC

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:31 AM PDT

When Tiffany M. Griffin began dating her husband, Dariel, in 2014, they discovered a shared love of candles. They began researching how to make their own and soon, a passion project was born.

But it was not until Tiffany found herself furloughed from her government job in 2019 that she decided to turn that passion project into a full-time pursuit. Bright Black Candles was incorporated as a business late last year, and things were off to a promising start. Then COVID-19 hit, forcing them to move their outdoor-market-based business to an e-commerce model.

As a small startup, a pandemic could have had dire consequences for the couple, but with more of their customer base quarantining, they noticed a small uptick in sales. Then, nationwide protests against systemic racism hit — which led to something Bright Black could not have possibly have predicted: a mention on a viral Twitter thread, which led to a mention on Beyonce's website, which led to an astronomical spike in requests for hand-poured candles. Host Anita Rao talks to Tiffany M. Griffin about the wild ride she, Dariel and Bright Black Candles are navigating.

Interview Highlights

On Finding Out Bright Black Candles Was A Stop on Beyonce's "Black Parade Route"

As has become her custom, Beyonce dropped a surprise single with a theme of Black empowerment on Juneteenth. In conjunction, she updated her website to include a curated list of Black-owned businesses nationwide. Bright Black Candles was included on that list, but Griffin had no idea that they would be. "We actually didn't know that we were included on the list until well into the evening of Juneteenth when I finally looked at my phone and realized that I had about 60 DMs from various people who had seen the list and let us know that we were on the list."

On Scent Artistry

Griffin says that Bright Black Candles' mission is broader than just delivering scented candles to consumers as cozy home accents. She and her husband considered their hand-poured candles a way to deliver artistic messages to their customers. "Olfactory art — or scent as a medium for telling stories — is kind of understated or less recognized. We wanted to use scent as an artistic medium because you have to be fully present to experience it," says Griffin. "It's directly tied to memory. It undergirds taste in many ways. It's a very powerful sense."

On The Significance of The Ida B. Wells Candle

"This is the 100-year anniversary of women's suffrage. Too often in this country, 'women' is conflated with white women. ... When people think of the social category of woman, they think of a white woman. When they think of women's suffrage, they think of the contributions that white women made. We wanted to highlight the contributions that Black women made to women's suffrage … so we leveraged this candle offering — the Ida B. Wells candle — as entree into this dialogue around voting and the importance of the contributions that Black women have historically made and continue to make to voting," explains Griffin. "The scent notes are black tea, ginger and sage. We nicknamed that candle 'Stay Woke.' A lot of people understand the roles that Black female voters play in dictating and shaping elections in this country and the candle offering is a way to spark that conversation."

On The Sudden Need to Scale Up, Post-'Beyonce Bump'

A mention by one of the most famous women in the world can turn a new business upside-down. It is something Griffin and her husband are learning in real time, faced with a sudden need to meet a product demand much higher than they were managing less than two months ago. "There aren't tons of examples of hundreds of percent of scaling in four days. Prior to the first week of June, our following were people who, through various pathways, came across our business, liked our story and were coming on our journey with us. In three days, we have this influx of literally thousands of people who don't know us from Jane and are sort of just buying candles because Beyonce said it's cool. ... While we're incredibly grateful that, out of all the businesses to support, so many people chose us, we're also mindful of the responsibility that comes with it," says Griffin.

Beyonce drops new surprise single on Juneteenth; sales to benefit Black businesses - Richmond Free Press

Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:00 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES - Beyoncé did not let Juneteenth pass without dropping one of her signature surprises — a new single called "Black Parade."

"I'm going back to the South, I'm going back where my roots ain't watered down," Beyoncé sings, opening the track. At several points on the new release, the singer tells listeners to "Follow my parade."

Proceeds from the song will benefit Black-owned small businesses in need, a message entitled "Black Parade Route" on the singer's website said. According to the post, sales will go to "BeyGOOD's Black Business Impact Fund administered by the National Urban League." The post included links to dozens of Black-owned businesses.

Beyoncé

"Happy Juneteenth. Being Black is your activism. Black excellence is a form of protest. Black joy is your right," the message said.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African-Americans learned they were free following the Civil War. While President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 freed slaves in the South beginning Jan. 1, 1863, it wasn't enforced in many places until after the end of the Civil War two years later. Confederate soldiers surrendered in April 1865, but word didn't reach the last enslaved Black people until June 19, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to Galveston, Texas.

"We got rhythm, we got pride, we birth kings, we birth tribes," Beyoncé sings toward the end of the nearly 5-minute song.

Juneteenth was marked with new urgency this year amid weeks long protests over police brutality and racism sparked by the May 25 death of George Floyd, an un-armed Black man, at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.

Beyoncé spoke out on social media in the wake of Mr. Floyd's death. "We're broken and we're disgusted. We cannot normalize this

pain," she said in an Instagram video that called for people to sign a petition demanding justice for Mr. Floyd.

The singer also joined the call for charges against the officers involved in the killing of Breonna Taylor, who was gunned

down in March by officers who burst into her Louisville, Ky., home. Beyoncé wrote in a letter last Sunday to Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron that the three Louisville police officers "must be held accountable for their actions." Mr. Cameron has asked for patience amid a probe, but Louisville's mayor announced last Friday that one of the officers would be fired.

The release of "Black Parade" is the singer's latest philanthropic effort. In April, she announced her BeyGOOD charity would partner with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's Start Small campaign to provide $6 million in relief funds to a variety of groups working to provide basic necessities in cities including Detroit, Houston, New York and New Orleans.

It's also the latest surprise release from the singer, who along with husband Jay-Z, released the nine-track album "Everything Is Love" in 2018 with no notice. In 2013, Beyoncé released the self-titled album "Beyoncé," also without any notice.

"I hope we continue to share joy and celebrate each other, even in the midst of struggle," she wrote in an Instagram post announcing the release of "Black Parade." "Please continue to remember our beauty, strength and power."

Beyoncé Wasn't Interested in Dating Jay-Z Until Her Mom Convinced Her to Give Him a Chance - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: 19 Jun 2020 02:21 PM PDT

When asked to name a famous celebrity couple, Beyoncé and Jay-Z are usually the first to come to people's minds. The pair have been together for nearly two decades and continue to prove that their love conquers all, even with relationship troubles thrown their way.

Though it seemed like Bey and Jay were always meant to be together, it turns out the singer wasn't "feeling" her now-husband when they first met. But thanks to Mrs. Tina Knowles-Lawson, Beyoncé was convinced to go on a date with the rapper, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z didn't start dating right away

Bey and Jay have been together for what seems like forever. Though they started a relationship shortly after their "03 Bonnie & Clyde" collaboration, getting Beyoncé to go on a date with the rapper actually took a little convincing.

The pair first crossed paths in 2000 when Beyoncé was about 18, and Jay-Z would have just turned 30. At the time, Beyoncé was achieving mega-success with her girl group Destiny's Child, while Jay-Z was also making big moves in the music industry.

In the song "713" off the couple's 2018 joint album, Everything Is Love, the rapper reveals he developed feelings for the singer at the 2000 MTV Spring Break festival, where they both performed.

However, it wasn't until the following year that Bey and Jay had a real, face-to-face conversation at the post-9/11 "Concert for New York City" benefit at Madison Square Garden.

According to insiders, the "99 Problems" rapper asked Beyoncé for her number, and they spent a few months talking on the phone.

Though Jay was smitten with her, Beyoncé reportedly didn't feel the same way.

"He's nice," Beyoncé said, according to J. Randy Taraborrelli's 2015 biography Becoming Beyoncé, "but I don't know…I'm not feelin' him."

Apparently, Bey's mom, Tina Knowles-Lawson, was the one who encouraged her to go on one date with Jay to see what happens. And as we can easily guess, the date probably went very well because Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been together ever since.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé have been a couple ever since

Beyoncé giving Jay-Z a chance clearly worked out in their favor because in 2003, they became an official couple, but didn't publically display their relationship until the following year at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards (the same award show where Bey would memorably reveal her baby bump seven years later).

In 2005, Beyoncé opened up about her and Jay's relationship for the first time with Vanity Fair.

"We give each other advice, but we respect each other's business, and we don't really get involved with that," she said of their romance. "When I'm not working, I don't want to talk about business. I don't want to think about it. I want to turn my phone off."

Fast forward to April 2008, Jay-Z and Beyoncé tied the knot in a secret, intimate wedding ceremony at the rapper's penthouse home in New York City.

Four years later, they welcomed their daughter Blue Ivy. And in 2016, the couple had their twins, Sir and Rumi Carter.

Today, Beyoncé and Jay-Z are still happily married as they just recently celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary.

And to think, the Grammy winners probably wouldn't be one of Hollywood's most inspiring power couples had Beyoncé not been encouraged to give Jay-Z a chance.

Beyoncé at Glastonbury 2011: a sassy triumph, rock purists be damned - Telegraph.co.uk

Posted: 26 Jun 2020 02:00 PM PDT

Removed from the comfort zone of their usual sci-fi staging, U2 were forced to rely on road warrior skills, and proved consummate crowd-pleasers whose greatest strengths lie with heart and art, not space-age showbiz. At the end of the set, Bono pulled an Irish and a Union flag from the crowd to drape over amplifiers but that was about as political as it got, if you discount the limp balloon of a tax protest.

Glastonbury 2011 had everything the British weather could throw at it, from torrential rain to baking sunshine. But mud was its defining feature. Before the festival had properly begun, 200,000 visitors had tramped the thoroughfares and campsites into a quagmire that made every step a battle.

The wisest option was to settle in one spot, try not to sink too deep, and enjoy whatever appeared in front of you. Among the best things I caught by accident: BB King playing hot Chicago blues on a wet Somerset afternoon, Paolo Nutini ripping it up like a Glaswegian Otis Redding, and heavy-rock girl group Stonefield partying like it was 1969.

You could argue the festival has been a victim of its success, but there is also a kind of avarice about its transformation from small hippy gathering to a world famous celebration of pop culture with too much going on for anyone to get to grips with. The defining characteristic is a kind of belligerently exuberant stoicism: drunken, windswept, sunburned, mud-splattered campers in danger of being swept away in rivers of urine from overflowing latrines, but refusing to move because they are having such a good time.
