Versace - 20 Years in the Making
Does
Versace even need an introduction? The brand is the creator of some truly iconic dresses and prints which have propelled the brand to where it is now and this season has been a celebration of this, more so than any others we've seen. Even though Versace feels very modern, it has had so many moments which define the brand and make it seem like it has been around for the longest time.
Spring/Summer 2020
This season opened with the iconic look you expect from Versace, very sexy and very minimalist. The shaping around the bust gives it this iconic sexy quality and this season it has been paired with shirts and made to look more formal. The shirts were given big shoulder pads and a slim shape which really define the body. The show opens with what you expect from Versace but then it gets a little bit more experimental.
This then transitions into something more casual, with more of a streetwear vibe. I can safely say I have never seen pullovers or hoodies on the Versace runway. However this season, there were some gorgeous tie-dye prints paired with incredibly sexy skirts and lace up boots. Even these hoodies have shoulder pads mind which takes away from their really casual look.
Slowly more colour is added, to the point where you get to neon macs and neon orange skirts, like the ones that were on the
Tom Ford runway. From this strong colour, the runway goes into elements of the Jungle print that J.Lo wore 20 years ago and the finale was J.Lo herself in a re-imagined Jungle dress.
J.Lo was a massive surprise and she completely stormed that runway. How the fuck is she 50? She looks better than me and I'm 26; it actually makes me sick. She has a slamming body and this dress is incredible. The only thing that I think is slightly disappointing is that it has a very obvious mesh panel to hold the front of the dress together which ruins the illusion a bit. The whole reason this dress was brought back was because it is 20 years since this dress started the idea of Google Images which really has done all of the favours for Versace and has made them the brand they are.
As seems to be my way this season, I am loving the accessories again for this runway. Versace is all about a skinny waist and big shoulders and the waist is always emphasised with a belt. I really liked that the belts had attachments to make them slightly more individual. I also love the wrap heels that wind around the leg, I think it is a super sexy look which really I don't think most people could get away with wearing. Of course the models wore the Versace medallion with the jewellery and accessories.
Based on This Show, What Should You Add to Your S/S Wardrobe?
Jungle Print. I know for a fact that I cannot rock jungle print like J.Lo but you can be damn sure I am going to be giving it a go next Spring/Summer. I might opt for something more conservative as I am not that brave and I am under no illusion that I look like J.Lo.
Strong Tailoring. There is one thing that can be said for Versace and that is that they know how to create a strong silhouette. Versace is a brand for those who aren't afraid and the shoulder pads are a testament to this.
Time to Wear Streetwear? I am not a fan of a hoodie but I do love a sweatshirt and I love the ones in this runway. My problem with them normally is that they are casual and they have no real shape but these hoodies have shoulder pads in them and I love that. If I could add one of these to my wardrobe, I would happily wear hoodies from now on.
J.Lo is Goddess. I mean this isn't new but I just wanted to point it out, my god does she look incredible.
